Puppies

Our puppy training program consists of 5 hours of private training. Usually done as two 1.5 hour and one 1 hour sessions in your home and a 1 hour session out in public. A 30 minute phone consulation is offered for those who contact us before the puppy arrives at their home to make sure you have what you need.

Getting a puppy or any new dog is very exciting. Your dog starts learning the minute he enters your home, we tend to forget this. Learn how to handle those crucial first days of puppy-hood appropriately to start on the road to creating all good habits so you don’t have to problem solve later. We cover anything and everything you will need to start off on the right foot.

All lessons begin with addressing any concerns. We create a plan to get you on the right path. Some areas that will be covered:
House training – where, how often, what if an accident happens
Biting – how to interact appropriately so the biting does not become a habit
Containment – where, when, how long
Leash and collar introduction
Greetings – door manners, start right from day one
Handling and beginning grooming
Response to name => beginnings of your recall foundation

Confidence and Composure –
A Safe Learning Environment for the Socially Challenged Dog

The Confidence & Composure program is a unique and comprehensive 3-step program that addresses “aggressive” behaviours displayed by your dog while walking on leash. (Or “leash reactivity” as we prefer to say.)

Dogs that are overly reactive and “aggressive” are often nervous or scared. They need to build their confidence when faced with what they perceive as a “scary thing” and to learn a new way of coping.

Confidence & Composure has a proven track record and was developed here in Ottawa by master trainer, Paola Hoger of Shake-a-Paw: “Urban life is a reality for a lot of dogs today. Walking calmly on leash is a basic requirement for their everyday lives. Walking our dog is one of the reasons we have them in the first place and it’s supposed to be fun. I want all dog owners to experience a calm and relaxed walk.”

If any of these statements describe you:

Then Confidence & Composure is the place for you!

Do any of these behaviours describe your dog?

Then Confidence & Composure is the place for you!

Get started today! Have the dog you’ve always dreamed about. Follow these 3 easy steps…

Step 1: Book your private session (cost of $95.00)

During this one-on-one initial assessment, we will address some general behaviour issues and teach you some new walking skills.
For appointments in Ottawa contact Carol by phone: 613-295-9094 or by email: carolthedogwalker@gmail.com
For appointments in Kemptville – Winchester area contact Paola 613-989-3647 or info@dogtraining.ca

Step 2: Join a group class “Calming the Reaction” (cost of $190.00)

fter 2-4 weeks of practice on your own, join a group class of 4-6 dogs and owners just like you in a classroom setting (usually outdoors). Here you will build a history of success with the other participants so you (and your dog) can relax in everyday life situations involving other dogs and exciting stimuli. You will know what to do and you will both be prepared.

This intensive 6-week class will teach your dog

You will learn the skills that you need to minimize your dog’s reaction and get him/her back under control. Some basic obedience skills will also be reviewed so that your dog will learn to function (as we say, “keep the brain in the body”) while faced with heavy distractions.

Step 3: Advanced Obedience – On The Road

Agility

Get ready for the most popular dog sport. Agility training consists of teaching your dog to work with you so that your dog can go through a set of obstacles. We do a lot of games to build drive, while also teaching control, giving you a great agility partner.

One of the great things about agility is it can be done by all breeds and all handlers. Check out this video of one of our demos.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Testimonials

"I have learned a lot of new skills of connecting with my dog through this training. My dog loves it and he is fabulous. It is a lot of fun. It’s great to learn along with your dog. The instructor is awesome and gives her students a lot of confidence in order to succeed with training. I am having a lot of fun with my dog."

- Nathalie

"This was a great day! This was the day my puppy was born. Her name is Sassy. After a short while, I decided Sassy needed puppy training. After much research, I found Shake-a-Paw training. New to this sort of stuff, I met Paola Hoger, the instructor and owner. I had a nice new puppy and I spoiled her beyond believe. Paola quickly showed me that I should be in control, not the puppy. But how could you say no to that face……………………….. At the end of puppy training I had a puppy who was well mannered, could walk on a leash, and came when called!

dog1What more could I ever expect???

And then something strange happened.
My cute little puppy turned into a miniature German Shepard. I think she was actually switched at a training session. Here is a before and after. Same Dog (8 months apart)!!!

Needless to say, I was quite happy. I had a great dog, on a farm, and she fed the horses with me. I was quite content. But was she???
I didn’t know she had greater abilities……… until I was introduced to agility training. Once again, this was under the careful direction of the owner of Shake-a-Paw, Paola Hoger. Now my cute little puppy can jump obstacles, go through tunnels, and a variety of challenges. Benefits to this experience were a heightened sense of ability on my puppy’s part.
Not only does she look forward to her weekly training, I do to."

Oh, I’m so sorry, I forgot to mention two of the most important things:

Scent Work

Canine Scent Work or Nosework is a fairly new sport modeled after detection training for professional narcotics or bomb dogs. It offers dog owners an opportunity to allow their dogs to explore their natural scenting ability in a safe and controlled environment. The sport uses the scent of different essential oils that can be easily purchased and stored by the average person. Dogs are taught to hunt/search for “target odours” in a variety of settings to create a mind challenging and extremely fun game for your dog to play. Training usually begins indoors with box or container searches, and then advances to room searches, outdoor and vehicle searches.

Scent work is suited to all types of dogs and owners whether you practice for fun or competition. Many human and/or canine disabilities are easily accommodated, as are behaviour issues including dog reactivity. Classes and competitions are run so that each search is done individually by one dog and handler team working at a time, allowing dogs with issues to focus and learn. Working without social stressors allows the dog and handler to be free to concentrate on the search. As the sport is relatively “low impact” it is great for young puppies, elderly dogs and dogs with injuries.

The sport encourages dogs to be independent as the owner has to believe in the dog’s ability to find the target odour. It gives the dog an outlet to do what comes naturally and just “be a dog”. This helps to promote the dog’s confidence and builds a trusting relationship between canine and owner. It also provides intense mental stimulation and many behaviour issues are reduced because the dog’s desire to search helps develop self-control and focus. Our scent work classes are taught by Lee Anne Rogers. Lee Anne has been training and competing in various dog activities for 15 years. In 2013 she graduated with honors from the Professional Dog Trainer program at Animal Behavior College and is currently taking courses from “Ethology Institute Cambridge”. She actively competes in Agility and Nosework with her English Springer Spaniel “Drifter”.

Lee Anne is working on completing the requirements to become certified as a Nosework Instructor through the “National Association of Canine Scentwork®”. She has attended seminars for Nosework with Ron Gaunt, Amy Herot and Jill Marie O’Brien and she recently participated in a 5 day K-9 Nosework camp in Pennsylvania where she learned from some of the top instructors

UTILIZE YOUR DOG'S NATURAL SCENTING ABILITIES

A dog's sense of smell is about thousand times more sensitive than that of humans. This is how dogs gather information about their surroundings all the time. People use a dog's keen sense of smell in many ways from search and rescue missions to detecting narcotics, bed bugs or diseases. Every dog possesses this amazing scenting ability and they love performing tasks where they can use this skill.

In Scent Skills classes we develop your dog's scenting skills to search and locate a target scent. These exercises burn off mental and physical energy, and reinforce the bond between dog and owner. Because every dog will be working individually in class, this program is suited also for reactive dogs.

You choose the scent of interest to suit your purposes. It can be for example mushrooms, an essential oil, scent of a specific human, spices, tea etc. If you wish to prepare your dog for Sport Detection Trials, a Canadian dog sport where the dog locates an essential oil scent within a search area, we will use essential oils.

Learning outcomes:

Tracking

6 weeks

“With a keen sense of smell – 100,000 times stronger than humans – dogs are often used to find lost people and animals, drugs, avalanche and disaster victims, and even to detect cancer. Tracking is a canine sport that demonstrates a dog’s natural ability to recognize and follow a scent and is the foundation of canine search and rescue work. Unlike obedience and agility trials, where dogs respond to the owner’s commands, in tracking a dog is completely in charge, for only he knows how to use his nose to find and follow the track.”

Tracking is offered twice a year in the spring and fall.

Our tracking classes are taught by Jancy Watkins. Jancy has immersed herself, and her dog, in the world of Tracking since 2013.

Training has included beginner and advanced tracking classes as well as numerous daylong workshops.

Experience also includes 2 and 3 day long Search and Rescue camps.

Jancy’s current dog succeeded in acquiring her TD title last summer and is poised to trial in the hopes of adding TDX and UTD titles.
